As the original inventors of buoyancy shorts back in 2007, we are proud that our first design is still going strong and are now called the “Originals” to recognize their heritage. With over a decade of fantastic customer reviews behind them, they have helped thousands of swimmers to improve both their body position in the water and swim technique.
‘The Originals’ are made from top Yamamoto Smoothskin neoprene and are stitched and bonded the same way as a triathlon wetsuit. The shorts are designed using 3mm neoprene down the centre for buoyancy and 5mm neoprene down the sides to promote hip rotation through each stroke.
These shorts help develop your open water swimming technique while in the pool, where wearing a full wetsuit would either be too hot, or banned by the life-guards.
For use in open-water training or races as an alternative to swimming in a full wetsuit (when the water is warm enough!).

"Great short really work well"

"Great. Faster immediately, no need for any other flotation."

"My first pair of buoyancy shorts and I’m delighted with them! Have been amazed by how much they have improved my swimming. By providing additional buoyancy, I am able to concentrate on improving my stroke rather than struggle to stay afloat. On one occasion, I did peg them, by the waistband, onto my washing line to dry out and was a bit surprised / disappointed that the material retained the peg marks and didn’t spring back. Won’t be doing that again."

"My first item from Zone 3. Super impessed with the quality of this item. And a great fit; the size charts are spot on for me."
— Robert W. (5/5)
"Great Pair of swim shorts used them 2x already, to early to tell if they are helping to improve my swim technique. Only used them in the Pool and yet to try them out in Open Water."

"Excellent shorts help with buoyancy"

"Bought these because I have sinking legs. And water is getting warmer, so a full wetsuit is getting to much. After some great support from Adam I picked the right size and tried them two days ago. The bouyancy is prefect. Had a good 2. 2km swim."

"Last night, I used my new Zone 3 Original 5/3 MM buoyancy shorts for my Boy Scout swim test. I'm 71 years old and have had 2 knee replacements + a hip replacement. In other words, I have enough tungsten steel in me to build a battleship! I was on the varsity swimming team in high school and college. So, I'm a very strong swimmer. However, all the extra ballast caused me to assume a feet down trim in the water and floating on my back was very difficult. The swimming test involves swimming 75 yds without stopping, another 25 yards using elementary backstroke, and float on your back for 30 seconds. The buoyancy shorts enabled me to assume a horizontal trim in the water and the neoprene material also kept the hip joint and associated muscles warm, thus helping to prevent muscle cramping. It was easy to relax and just swim without wearing myself out. Your product made the difference between passing and not passing the test. Having passed the test qualifies me to go on paddling trips with my troop. Thank you for making a product that enables an old man to stay in the game and keep doing outdoor stuff with my Scout troop!"

"I've been using these shorts for a couple of months now, but I was worried that using them in the chlorinated water at the pool would quickly ruin them, even though I rinse them thoroughly after every swim. Fortunately, they are in decent shape. Yes, in some places the glue is no longer holding and the shorts themselves are slightly discoloured, but this does not affect their use. They are still great for improving body position in the water."
